What is a blepharoplasty?
A blepharoplasty is an eyelid operation to remove excess skin and fat (if required) from the upper and/or lower eyelids.
What are the causes?
Ageing of eyelid skin results in reduced elasticity and bagginess. The skin around your eyes is very delicate, it is the thinnest skin on your face and is therefore prone to ageing faster. Ageing of the skin can be accelerated by your skin type, UV damage, smoking, diet and genetics.
What you might experience:
This excess skin may restrict your field of vision or interfere with your tear film. It can also cause irritation or heaviness over the eyes and make your eyes appear tired and older.
What treatment is needed?
If you are concerned about your eyelid appearance blepharoplasty surgery can help to improve the appearance around the eyes making the eyes feel lighter and less tired. Your eye and eyelid area will have more definition but does not remove wrinkles, eliminate dark circles or lift sagging brows.
In most cases surgery is for cosmetic benefit and not medically required, therefore this may not be covered by health insurance.
